Sylvandell's Rocky Mountain Horses Here at Sylvandell, we only breed three or four mares per year, but we select the best stallions with the best conformation, temperament, and gait. At birth, we imprint each baby and handle it daily until sold. We start training immediately, so each baby knows to “respect” its human keepers.

| A local 82-year-old neighbor once told us that when he dies, he wants to be reincarnated as a Rocky Mountain Horse and live at Sylvandell!!! “Because” he said, “You treat your horses better than most people treat their children.” This said, let us tell you that this great treatment also includes discipline. We DO NOT “spoil” our Rockies—they MUST learn respect—but we DO give them the best of care.

Vaccinations, worming, grooming, handling and training are all part of routine horse health and we maintain medical records to include regular farrier and veterinary work. |
In addition, in the event of a natural disaster or if a horse is stolen, we Micro-chip all our horses with the HORSEtrac USA System, a protection network for MicroChipped Horses. Certificates of transfer accompany each horse when sold to a new owner. This critical information may one day return a lost or stolen horse to its rightful owner.

Our babies are happy and content and stay with their dam until weaned at 4 to 6 months of age. About 2 months before weaning, we grain feed foals in a separate stall from the mare but head to head so they feel secure. We increase the separation time until eventually they are ready to wean “by the moon.”
|

We’ve found this process to be less traumatic than any other weaning method. During this time, each baby learns to cross tie for grooming, stand tied, lift feet, and deal with ear grooming. After weaning, the babies immediately bond to us and their conformation and formal training begins with plenty of sunshine, pasture and play time in between!
